To my surprise, most of the wannabes I interviewed on camera were relieved to reveal their secret. For them, talking to me was a little bit like "coming out." They talked about being "trapped in a body that isn't yours" and "wanting to be the person they've always thought they were." I was struck by how similar those words and feelings were to people who I have talked to who have Gender Identity Disorder. As a society, we are much more accepting of G.I.D. today (well, at least one can get treated for it), but it was just 30 years ago when there was no help for anyone with that problem.
