Thanks to grants from the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board, I was able to travel to New York, Florida, France, Holland, England and Scotland to interview medical professionals and wannabes. The psychiatrists and surgeons I talked to convinced me that this was not a joke— this obsession is a serious medical and psychological problem that deserves a closer look. I also attended a meeting in New York City for wannabes from around the world who meet once a year to discuss issues related to their condition. One of the things they talked about is how there appears to be no medication or therapy that helps people with this problem. They said that so far, the only "cure" appears to be amputation. Now that is something that simply couldn't be ignored and that's when I became convinced that I should make this documentary.
