Director/Producer
Melody Gilbert
Melody Gilbert is an award-winning independent documentary filmmaker and
educator from St. Paul, Minnesota who has worked in film and television for 20
years. Her most recent independent documentary, A LIFE WITHOUT PAIN
(www.alifewithoutpain.com) premiered (in competition) at the 2005 South By
Southwest Film Festival (www.sxsw.com). Her controversial documentary, WHOLE
(www.whole-documentary.com), which is about people who want to become an
amputee, premiered at the 2003 Los Angeles Film Festival (in competition) and
has been seen at festivals, in theaters and on more than a dozen television
stations worldwide including the Sundance Channel and TV2Denmark. WHOLE is
available on NETFLIX. Her debut independent documentary,
MARRIED AT THE MALL (www.marriedatthemall.com) has also screened worldwide. Ms.
Gilbert is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Jerome Foundation
and the Minnesota State Arts Board. She is also the 2004 IFP/McKnight
Foundation Artists Fellow for filmmaking. When she's not making documentaries,
she teaches students how to make them. She was an adjunct professor and
lecturer in broadcast journalism and documentary production at the University
of Minnesota for seven years, and she has taught documentary boot camp classes
for IFP/Minnesota, the Walker Art Center and in Romania and Kyrgzstan. Ms. Gilbert is currently a visiting professor at Carleton College teaching documentary filmmaking.
Cinematographers
Melody Gilbert, Adrian Danciu & Matt Ehling
Melody Gilbert was the primary cinematographer for A LIFE WITHOUT PAIN.
Adrian Danciu (additional cinematography) is an award-winning cinematographer
originally from Romania where he worked for TVR (public television in Romania)
for over a decade. Now living in Minnesota, he is a freelance cinematographer
for National Geographic Explorer, KARE-TV and TPT (Twin Cities Public
Television). .
Matt Ehling (additional cinematography) is a director of photography, producer and editor with over 12 years
of film and video production experience. His production company, ETS Pictures,
provides ENG crews for documentary field production. Matt has also edits and
produces his own documentaries as well as promotional and industrial films.
Editors
Charlie Gerszewski and Todd Grabe
Charlie Gerszewski (online editor) edits documentaries, commercials and music
videos. He was the editor for A LIFE WITHOUT PAIN, WHOLE and MARRIED AT THE
MALL. Currently he works as an editor at Channel Z, a post-production company
in Minneapolis.
Todd Grabe (offline editor) edits documentaries and promotional videos. He is
currently working with David Eberhardt (Slamdance award-winner for LONG GONE)
on his new film. Todd is president of his own post-production company,
Sprocket Post (www.sprocketpost.com).
Associate Producer/Researcher
Rita Beatty
Rita Beatty is an award-winning producer who is currently an executive producer
at KARE-TV in Minneapolis. She was the researcher and associate producer for
WHOLE and MARRIED AT THE MALL. Ms. Beatty won a national I.R.E. (Investigative
Reporters and Editors) along with Ms. Gilbert for a short documentary about how
the U.S. government sprayed innocent citizens of Minneapollis with toxic
chemicals in the 1950's. That piece prompted a national investigation led by
the late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone.
Production Assistant
Carrie Bush
Carrie Bush has had a variety of careers, from teaching physics to being a rock
climbing instructor. She has lived and worked in South America and California
where she became an avid longboarder. When she realized her calling was making
movies, she packed it all in and moved back to Minnesota and enrolled in film
school. Carrie is now directing and producing films, including her own indie
short called "Sift."
